IAPS began with the first International Conference for Students of Physics in Budapest in 1986, inspired by Hungarian students. The association was officially founded on 12 September 1987 to promote cooperation among physics students worldwide. Since then, IAPS has organized the annual ICPS in different countries, expanded activities with summer schools and PLANCKS, and built partnerships with leading physics organizations, remaining a global student-run network.
